Desire for Freedom of Choice
Has Jonas gains more wisdom thought the memories he realizes that he had never had freedom and his friends and family will never have freedom to choice things. They don't even have color so how could they choose things like maybe a what color tunic they would want to wear. Jonas vents to the Giver about this by shouting,
“‘If everything's the same, then there aren't any choices! I want to wake up in the morning and decide things! A blue tunic, or a red one?’ He looked down at himself, at the colorless fabric of his clothing. ‘But it's all the same, always.’ Then he laughed a little. ‘I know it's not important what you wear. It doesn't matter. But—’ ‘It's the choosing that's important, isn't it?’ The Giver asked him”(97). |
Danger of Stability and Predictability
Life that is stagnant is no fun but more than that it has no meaning, no drive, no differences. It may be easy or comfortable but how can you grow if you never try to move. When Jonas realizes this and decides to run away to give people something. He reflects on his community and how they were. "The life where nothing was ever unexpected. Or inconvenient. Or unusual. The life without color, pain, or past”(81). while this may sound good without pain, think of what you would have to give up. |
