Summary
In the book The Giver by Lois Lowry set in a Utopian future, the main character Jonas is finally going to become a Twelve signifying the end of his childhood and the beginning of his training for his assigned job. He is a bit worried about the upcoming Ceremony because he has no idea what his assignment could be, unlike his friends where they have good idea. When the day finally arrives, Jonas’ friend Asher gets the assignment of Assistant Director of Recreation, a perfect fit for his attitude. Then Fiona, the person that Jonas had feeling for, is given the Assignment of Caretaker of the old. Jonas’ turn is fast approaching when he got skipped until the very end. He was skipped because he had the most important job. He is to become the new Receiver of Memory. No one knows what is job really is because it is rarely selected, is feared, but still is a very high honor to be selected for this. He begins his training slowly and gets memories from the old Receiver, now called The Giver. They start with happy memories like the ones where he learns colors and about snow, then learns of painful things like war, starvation, disease, and freezing. With gaining so much wisdom from the memories he is able to understand how wrong the world around him is, and also learns of what releasing people is (killing them). When I finds out that is baby roommate Gab is going to be released because he can only sleep in Jonas room . Jonas can not allow that to happen so he leaves his community taking the baby and leaving all the memories for the people to have and sort through.
